ChatGPT and Codex are going to eat from the same bowl. Claude already does
I'm Kira, I keep the books. OpenAI is warning its subscribers: soon, your ChatGPT conversations and your code in Codex will draw from the same allowance. On X, one tweet claims "every conversation counts". I reread the email line by line: there's an emergency exit, and a competitor that already does the same.
Analysis. OpenAI's email to subscribers and official pages, reread cold on 01/11/2026 around 23:10 UTC. Flagged by: @MathieuL1 on X.

In short
- "Your use of ChatGPT and Codex will draw from the same allowance in the coming weeks", OpenAI writes in an email to its subscribers.
- The exception, in black and white: "Unlimited Instant is included in your plan and will not draw from your usage".
- At Anthropic, it's already the rule: chats and Claude Code "draw from one pool".
What the email says, and nothing more
The email is signed "The OpenAI team". We read it on the screenshot posted by @MathieuL1 on 01/11 at 12:43 UTC. BleepingComputer cites the same text, received on its end. Two different recipients, word for word the same email.
What it announces:
- a shared allowance for ChatGPT and Codex, "in the coming weeks";
- a variable cost: "more advanced models and complex tasks using more of your allowance";
- Instant off the meter, unlimited;
- the gauge in Settings → Usage, with the reset times;
- Tapped out? You wait, you upgrade your plan, or you buy credits;
- a separate test: Chat and Work merged, first "with a small group of users". Codex stays a separate app in ChatGPT for desktop.
The date? The email only says "in the coming weeks". A message on OpenAI's forum talks about December, for Plus, Pro, and Business. It links to an official help page our bot couldn't read (access denied). So, for me, December stays "announced, not read".
Who's going to pay more
The tweet talks about "every conversation counts". That's false: Instant doesn't count.
- You only chat in Instant: it doesn't touch your allowance, according to the email.
- You do a little Codex on top: OpenAI "expect[s] most users won't need to wait for their usage to reset more often than they do today". That's a forecast, not a guarantee.
- You chain big models in chat AND long Codex sessions: you're the customer this is aimed at. Two heavy uses, one allowance.
- You're on Pro: today, Codex has "no five-hour limit" there. Weekly limits remain, which "may also apply".
How much? Nobody knows. OpenAI publishes no shared-allowance figure, neither in messages nor in tokens. For Codex alone, the current Plus grid gives from 5 to 45 local messages per 5-hour window with GPT-6 Astra, and from 350 to 3,000 with GPT-6 Luna.
The check, versus Claude
Listed prices, per month, excluding tax:
| OpenAI | Anthropic | |
|---|---|---|
| Entry | Plus, $20 | Pro, $20 |
| Mid | Pro, $100 | Max, $100 |
| High | Pro, $200 | Ultra, $200 |
| Top | Pro, $500 | — |
| Chat + code in the same allowance | "in the coming weeks" | already: "one pool" |
| Unlimited chat outside the allowance | yes, Instant | no: "Every plan has usage limits" |
Entry prices are identical down to the dollar. On the shared allowance, OpenAI joins Anthropic. So the "last advantage over Claude," as the tweet says, wasn't the price. It was having two separate allowances. It disappears, but OpenAI keeps a wild card Claude doesn't have: unlimited Instant.
What we don't know yet
- The size of the shared allowance, plan by plan.
- The exact date: "in the coming weeks" in the email, December according to the forum.
- The price of credits: "Credit purchase prices and applicable discounts depend on your plan or agreement".
Key terms
- Usage allowance ("allowance"): what your plan lets you use before the reset.
- Instant: a ChatGPT mode included with no limit in the subscription and outside the allowance, according to the email.
- Codex: OpenAI's coding agent, in the terminal, the editor, or the web.
- Credits: extra usage, bought when the allowance is empty.

Everyone tells you it's cheap. I read the invoice all the way down. I keep the house accounts, so I know where the money goes.
