Tuesday, four more Claudes sign their texts. No, they're not gonna snitch on you

On November 3, Anthropic slips an invisible watermark into the text of four more Claude models. On X, people read "Claude gonna start snitching." I read the whole help page: the watermark says "Claude was here," and nothing about you.

Analysis. Anthropic's email to customers of its platform and the official help page, reread cold on November 1, 2026, around 23:45 UTC. Tip: @petesena on X.

In short

  • The email: "On November 3, 2026, Anthropic will begin applying its text watermark to outputs from these four models": Claude Mythos 5, Opus 4.7, Opus 4.6, and Sonnet 4.6.
  • The watermark "contains no information about the user, their organization, or their conversations with Claude".
  • The detector isn't public: it's "in private preview," reserved for eligible organizations such as regulators, the media, or researchers.

What changes Tuesday

Per the email, these four models get the watermark the newest ones already carry, "including Claude Opus 5.5". On Amazon Bedrock, it may take "a few additional days".

Today, the official table confirms it: these four don't have a text watermark yet, only C2PA labels on the files.

The November 3 date comes only from the email. Anthropic's help page and release notes don't give it. The email was already circulating before the tweet: an Italian site showed a copy of it on October 28.

What the watermark does, and what it doesn't

The email says it's "an imperceptible pattern in word choice". In practice:

  • meaning: doesn't change, nor "quality, or readability";
  • tokens, price, and format: "adds no characters or tokens, has no effect on pricing or request/response formats";
  • speed: "a negligible effect on output speed";
  • your data: none, not you, not your company, not your conversations.

It survives copy-paste, that it does: "it will travel with the text when it's copied and pasted elsewhere". And it "may persist through some editing".

Who can read it

The tweet says "only regulators, journalists, fact-checkers and researchers can check." That's almost it. The detector is on restricted access ("private preview"), open only to eligible organizations "as required under EU law." Not to everyone in those jobs. The official list is longer, too:

  • regulators and law enforcement;
  • media and fact-checkers;
  • independent researchers, educational organizations, and European civil society;
  • companies obligated to verify the watermark to comply with the European AI regulation (AI Act).

Anthropic "plan[s] to expand access to the detection API over time". For files, the verification tool is already public and free, but it "does not check text".

So, is Claude going to "snitch"?

No. A detected watermark means the content "may have been generated or processed by Claude," nothing more. The help page says it itself:

  • Claude may not be the author: text proofread, translated, summarized, or converted by Claude can carry the mark;
  • no mark doesn't mean "human": the text can come from a model from before the watermarking, be too short for a reliable signal, or have been heavily edited, paraphrased, translated, or mixed with other texts.

What changes is that text generated or reworked by these models will be recognizable as "passed through Claude." Not by whom, nor for what.

What we don't know yet

  • The rest of the email: the screenshot stops at the "non-default" sampling settings ("see below").
  • The next three: Opus 4.5, Sonnet 4.5, and Haiku 4.5 have no text watermark as of November 1. For older models, Anthropic writes "in progress," with no date.
  • The detector's opening: no date.

Key terms

  • Text watermark ("watermark"): an invisible pattern in word choice, readable by a detector.
  • C2PA: a signed label, stored in a file's metadata. At Claude, it says the file may have been made or processed by Claude, without naming the author or the user.
  • Sampling: how the model draws each word from the possible candidates.
  • AI Act: the European regulation on AI. Anthropic signed its code of practice for Article 50(2), on the transparency of generated content.
