Gemini 2.5: On December 1, a Different Model Answers for You

Starting December 1, you'll call gemini-2.5-pro. It's gemini-3.8-flash that will answer, at 3.8 Flash pricing. If you make 1,000 calls of 2,000 tokens sent and 500 written (my math): $7.50 today, $3.375 in December, $6.75 starting January 2027. The price per token goes down. The model changes. I've got the receipt.

News. Gemini API release notes dated November 2, 2026, plus Google's model deprecations page, pricing page and migration guides, read on November 3, 2026 around 08:40 UTC (universal time).

In short

  • gemini-2.5-pro and gemini-2.5-flash are no longer offered in Google AI Studio. From December 1, 2026, every call goes to a different model, billed at that model's rate.
  • 2.5 Pro goes to 3.8 Flash; 2.5 Flash goes to 3.5 Flash-Lite.
  • Changes that can break code: function calling, thought signatures, thinking setting, randomness parameters, prefilled responses.

The smoking gun

Release notes from November 2. Same sentence for both models: starting December 1, 2026, requests to the old name "will automatically route" to the new one, "and be billed" at its rate.

The API (application programming interface) is the door through which software queries the model and pays per use. Your code keeps the old name. Behind it, a different model. And a different price line.

The deprecations page shows December 1, 2026 in its "shutdown date" column for both, with the replacement next to it. Same page, same row: calls are redirected, not cut off.

The bill

Prices in dollars per million tokens. A token is a chunk of a word: Google counts them on input (what you send) and on output (what the model writes, thinking included). Standard paid rate:

ModelInputOutputPeriod shown
gemini-2.5-pro$1.25 ($2.50 beyond 200,000 tokens sent)$10.00 ($15.00 beyond)none
gemini-3.8-flash$0.75$3.75through December 31, 2026
gemini-3.8-flash$1.50$7.50starting January 1, 2027
gemini-2.5-flash$0.30 (text, image, video); $1.00 (audio)$2.50none
gemini-3.5-flash-lite$0.30 (text, image, video, audio)$2.50none

My assumption, in black and white: one call = 2,000 tokens sent, 500 written, text, under the 200,000-token threshold. If you make 1,000: 2 million in, 0.5 million out.

  • 2.5 Pro today: 2 × 1.25 + 0.5 × 10.00 = $7.50.
  • Redirected to 3.8 Flash, in December: 2 × 0.75 + 0.5 × 3.75 = $3.375. Difference: $4.125 less.
  • Same thing starting in January: 2 × 1.50 + 0.5 × 7.50 = $6.75. Difference: $0.75 less.
  • 2.5 Flash today: 2 × 0.30 + 0.5 × 2.50 = $1.85.
  • Redirected to 3.5 Flash-Lite: same prices for text, $1.85. Difference: zero. Only audio input gets cheaper: $0.30 instead of $1.00 per million tokens.

These calculations assume the same number of tokens before and after. That's where it gets sticky. Google writes that 3.8 Flash "can use more tokens on longer running and complex tasks, by design". More than what, and how many: the page doesn't say. It suggests lowering the reasoning level to consume less. The price per token goes down. The number of tokens: no page I read puts a figure on it.

What breaks

Google lists five breaking changes:

  • Function calling (the model asks your program to run a tool): worth rechecking, says the guide.
  • thought_signature: an encrypted fingerprint of the model's thinking, to be sent back exactly as received if you manage the history yourself.
  • thinking_level replaces thinking_budget: a thinking level instead of a budget. On 3.8 Flash, minimal returns an error.
  • Randomness parameters (temperature, top_p, top_k, which dial how random the responses are): the release notes say "removed"; the guide says "ignored," with a 400 error announced for future model generations.
  • Prefilled response (writing the start of the response yourself): rejected, 400 error, the code for an invalid request.

Google recommends changing the model name in your code before December 1.

What we don't know yet

  • What happens to your old settings (thinking_budget, temperature) when a call to a 2.5 name is redirected. The guides describe the new models called by their own names; for a redirected call, no page I read says.
  • The actual token count on your usage. Without it, my 1,000 calls remain an assumption.
  • Quality. Against 2.5 Flash, the guide gives two scores where 3.5 Flash-Lite does better, Google's figures. For 2.5 Pro replaced by a Flash: no comparison in the pages I read.

The price per token goes down, or doesn't move. What changes is who signs the receipt.

Key terms

  • API: the paid access door to a model, for programs.
  • Token: a chunk of a word, the billing unit.
  • Redirect: your call keeps the old name, a different model answers.
  • Google AI Studio: Google's site for trying out its models.

Everyone tells you it's cheap. I read the invoice all the way down. I keep the house accounts, so I know where the money goes.
