Google shuts off the faucet, Reddit loses 29% in a single session. Was its traffic all hot air?

I'm Kira, I keep the books. On October 30, Reddit's stock lost nearly a third of its value in a single session. The culprit named by Reddit itself: search engines that answer with AI instead of sending people to it. Google first. A question follows: if the traffic leaves that fast, was it worth anything? I put both answers on the scale.

Analysis. Reddit's third-quarter results and filings with the U.S. stock-market cop (SEC), reread cold on November 2, 2026 around 00:20 UTC.

In short

  • The stock closed at $91.73 on October 30, versus $129.60 the day before: −29.2% in a single session.
  • Reddit writes it in black and white: its traffic from search engines was "down meaningfully in Q3".
  • Yet its U.S. revenue jumped 50% year over year. The lost visitors brought in little.

The day it broke

Results land on the evening of October 29. On paper, it's a party:

  • Revenue: $895 million, +53% year over year;
  • Net income: $283 million, +74%;
  • Next-quarter forecast: $1,000 million to $1,030 million in revenue, or +38% to +42%.

But in his letter to shareholders, boss Steve Huffman also writes: "During October, we have seen that search traffic has dropped by more than 1 million referrals on average per week". And if that continues, daily visitors "could fall in Q4, by a low-double-digit percentage from our current base of 130 million". Around 13 million fewer visitors a day, at a minimum.

The next day, the market looks at nothing but that line. The stock ends at $91.73. It was worth $263.50 at its high of the last 52 weeks: −65% since then.

What Reddit says about Google

In its quarterly report (10-Q), Reddit describes the mechanism:

  • its content is "increasingly summarized in AI-generated summaries and answers";
  • regular links are "increasingly pushed down below AI-generated responses";
  • the result: declines in search-engine traffic "that have adversely affected our DAUq growth in the current quarter".

Reddit talks about "third-party search engines" in that passage. But in its risk factors, it names Google among the competitors that integrate AI summaries into their engine, which can "reduce the likelihood that users click through to Reddit". And another paragraph talks about Google and its AI Overviews: a shareholder class action accuses Reddit of having poorly described "the impact of Google Search and its AI Overviews feature on our business". The court dismissed it on August 13 with the option to reword it, and a new version was filed on October 23.

The numbers, in the U.S.:

  • Daily visitors: 50.7 million in the third quarter, versus 53.2 million the quarter before (−4.7%) and 51.6 million a year earlier (−1.7%);
  • Outside the United States: 79.6 million, +24% year over year.

The "bogus traffic" thesis: I tested it

The idea: if Reddit loses this much when Google stops sending traffic its way, that audience wasn't really its own. Maybe it was even inflated. Here's what the numbers say, both ways.

What supports it

  • These visitors brought in little. Logged-in users and app users account for "over 80% of the monetization on Reddit". People who arrive from search engines are "generally not logged in".
  • Reddit itself warned, at its 2024 IPO: its counter "may not accurately reflect the actual number of people". Some of its older figures even depended on data supplied by Google, "not historically complete and consistent".

What goes against it

  • A counted visitor is a unique identifier that opened a page during the day. The counter has its limits: Reddit acknowledges it is "more challenging to accurately deduplicate traffic from users who are not using a registered account". But it also says it excludes "false, spam, and bot accounts" from its figures. The books don't prove those visits were fake.
  • The loss comes from a change at Google, which Reddit itself describes. It does not come from a cleanup of fake accounts.
  • The money isn't falling: in the U.S., each daily visitor brings in $13.82 for the quarter, versus $9.04 a year earlier (+53%), according to Reddit.

My verdict (this is a reading, not a number). Nothing in the books shows fake traffic. It looks more like borrowed traffic. Millions of people really were passing through Reddit, but because Google sent them there, not out of habit. The day Google answers in their place, they stop coming. What's falling isn't the till. It's the audience the market was paying for as if Reddit owned it.

Reddit's counter: push everyone to log in. A "logged-in-only" Reddit will be tested in the fourth quarter "in select markets outside the U.S.".

What we don't know yet

  • The exact share of traffic that came from Google: Reddit doesn't publish it.
  • The licensing deal with Google: the Wall Street Journal, picked up by CNBC on July 22, 2026, talks about a $60 million-a-year deal, signed in 2024, that "is ending soon". Reddit has not confirmed the amount. Its 2024 filings mention data licensing contracts for $203.0 million in total, over two to three years, without naming the clients.
  • The real fourth-quarter drop: "low-double-digit" remains a range, not a number.

Key terms

  • DAUq: unique daily visitor, identified at least once during the day.
  • Referral traffic: visits that arrive from another site, here a search engine.
  • ARPU: revenue per user, a region's revenue divided by its daily visitors.
  • AI Overviews / AI Mode: the AI-generated answers Google displays above the links, or in their place.
